TALES FROM A TASTING

Sunset Vineyard, my oh my, doesn’t that sound like a beautiful place to visit? Tucked away into a high altitude canyon, Sunset Vineyards is one of Washington State’s gems for wine production. Grapes grow out of the limestone soil, creating a unique profile for the region.

With all of that formality out of the way, what that translates into for me was a very different Sauvignon Blanc that I’m used to sampling. If you haven’t figured out yet, I’m not a wine expert. All I can do is tell you about my experience with the wines I try.

At every party/event, I’m used to seeing New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, which are crisp and heavily minerally driven. The Wines of Substance Sauvignon Blanc is completely different; it blew away any of my preconceived notions of Sauvignon Blanc.

If I had to write just one description about the Wines of Substance Sauvignon Blanc it would be this – pineapple- apple pen. This sauvignon blanc has a heavy fruit and tropical fruit finish. Nothing I read about this wine mentioned the famed pineapple – apple pen. So, that’s why I’m reminding you, I’m no wine pro. Now, there is a little bit of that minerality.

What the heck is minerality anyhow? Well, it’s not a spice, or herbs, or any other type of edible distinguishable taste like fruit. Minerality is that indescribable component that you only know when you taste it. Lick a 9-volt battery to find out, hahaha. Just kidding. Generally, it’s described as “wet stone.” I’m still not really sure exactly how to describe it, other than it is that other component (most likely in white wine) that isn’t usually edible.

So, let’s just say the Wines of Substance Sauvignon Blanc has a little less of that “wet stone” or “rainy pavement” and a little more fruity fun. I rather enjoyed the departure from the usual mineral heavy Sauvignon Blanc. In fact, those types make the back of my mouth pucker a little too much. This, in contrast, was smooth and enjoyable.

It’s a perfect wine to enjoy with friends before dinner with a fruit and cheese plate. So, that is exactly what I did! If you’re a Sauvignon blanc fan and want to take a departure from the usual. Give this a try. Don’t forget to mention The Haute Life at Post Road Liquors or their sister stores for a 20% discount on this Wine Wednesday pick!
