2016 Burgans Albarino

COST – $15.99

GRAPE – 100% Albarino

COUNTRY – Spain

REGION – Rias Baixas

POST ROAD’S DESCRIPTION – light-bodied, crisp, easy drinking white for the warmer weather. A great alternative for the Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc lover, this off-dry white gives flavors of apricot and peach on the palate with a rich, minerally driven finish. Pair with shellfish, mussels, and roasted vegetables.

TASTING NOTES – A bright greenish yellow color with golden highlights. A uniquely fruity aroma where the variety is clearly appreciated, highlighting hints of ripe apples, apricots, and peach aromas. It is rich, mellow and well-balanced. The aftertaste is fully rounded and off dry on the palate with juicy fruit flavors, clean acidity, and a long, mineral-dominated finish.

TALES FROM A TASTING

From out of the dark and into the light, the Albarino grape roots go deep into the Spanish and Portuguese rolling hillsides. At one point, Albarino grapes clung to the bushes and the trunks of trees on the edges of the fields. Throughout the centuries, the Spanish cultivated the vine that once existed in the shadows, beginning the tradition of the Albarino vineyard.

The enlightenment of Albarino continues, as the 2016 Burgans Albarino is like a beacon of light in the middle of our week. This wine is just what I’ve been looking for- a refreshing alternative to the standard white wines we see in triplicate on almost every wine menu. If you’re into Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc, the next time you’re strolling through Post Road Liquors, grab an Albarino and give your palate a nice variation from the usual.

After you buy that bottle, head to the freshest fish market around, pick up some mussels and try our recipe for steamed and broiled mussels in a cilantro garlic butter sauce. Albarino wines are known for their seafood pairing and this 2016 Burgans is no exception!

I had no problem drinking the 2016 Burgans Albarino. Just as described, I found it light with a slight apricot flavor, but nothing that was overpoweringly sweet.  The crispness of the wine cut the garlic sauce quite nicely. As for the much-touted match for seafood – totally agree!

Again, if you are sick of your Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, switch things up a bit! Twist open the 2016 Burgans Albarino and enjoy the late afternoon light. 😉
