TALES FROM A TASTING

Have you ever sipped on velvet? On the first sip, the 2017 Cantine Colosi Nero d’Avola is so smooth, that was the first sensation that came to mind. Sicily gets the wines they do right. For example, if it weren’t for Sicily, the world wouldn’t know the joys of Marsala wine.

The same is true with Nero d’Avola. At the farthest southern tip of Sicily lies this city of Ancient origin, Avola. From Greek rule all the way through anti-fascist sentiment during World War Two, Avola has always had a foot onto the world’s stage. Today, that foot dances on the world’s culinary arena. A major exporter of almonds, the city also creates the world-renowned varietal of Nero D’Avola or “Black Avola” grapes.

Nero d’Avola is a full-bodied wine which many consider the most important red wine to come out of Sicily. When you open a bottle of the 2017 Cantine Colosi Nero d’Avola, you’ll understand why. That velvety smoothness is followed by the warm caress of dark berries. There isn’t any tanginess or puckering in the mouth. Nothing too strong. Just pure goodness that flows so easily across the palate. And, at Post Road Liquors at $14.99, it is easy on the wallet as well.

The grapes for the Cantine Colosi Nero d’Avola are grown close to the Mediterranean Sea in limestone soil. The skin on juice macerates for seven days and then this delicious wine is aged for five months in stainless steel.

As you can imagine, it goes perfectly with pasta dishes. I made fresh ravioli and lasagna with a sausage cream sauce to pair with the 2017 Cantine Colosi Nero d’Avola. This Sicilian wine comes with zero attitude and all love.

The best part of the experience was the fun I had sharing the wine with friends and feeding them homemade pasta. It took me back to my pre-teen and teen years when I moved in with my Italian step-mother and her family. Mealtime was not just for sustenance, but to bring friends and family to the table.

Wine and food are fun. It’s meant to be enjoyed. It should be smooth and easy, and not taken too seriously. What should be taken seriously is the enjoyment you get from the consumption and pairing and the labor of love that goes into making fresh sauces and food.

Cheers to Cantine Colosi’s Nero d’Avola and to Post Road Liquors for that reminder.

Grab a bottle and slay a little bit of old school food and wine fun! And remember, don’t take yourself too seriously. 😉
