TALES FROM A TASTING

Bonded between generations, the 2016 Chelsea Goldschmidt Alexander Valley Merlot claims to be a wine that can hang at a raging party or sit pretty during an evening of quiet dining. With the Superbowl coming up this weekend, we went with the party wine idea and paired it with Karen Sagaspe’s leftover pizza. And you know what, this is the type of wine that would do very well at a Superbowl (or any party). Why? It’s easy to drink.

I wasn’t distracted by heavy tannins or too-forward fruit. (Like anyone really wants to get hit on by fruit anyway.) Because of that unintrusiveness, the Chelsea Goldschmidt Merlot would also do well at a dinner party.

So why does the wine bridge the generation gap? Nick Goldschmidt, named the wine after his oldest daughter Chelsea, who grew up around the vineyards and drunk in all of that wine-making expertise. This wine is a collaboration between father and daughter. We’re not really sure which one had the raging party in mind, but we’ll take this wine at either venue.

For this 2016 vintage, the growing season stopped slightly early. But, that just meant lots of concentrated flavors bursting in each little fruit.

What I enjoyed about this wine was the subtleness of it. A little red fruit and a nice tannic wash. Although, my experience with the wine is different than the tasting notes. But, I guess that’s the fun of trying different wines! Buy a bottle of this Merlot and try it for yourself! And then don’t forget to tell us what you think! 😉
